What Happens at a Free In-Home Remodeling Estimate

The estimate is where a remodel is won or lost: the measurements, the choices and the price all start there. Here is how ours works, and what to ask any contractor who comes out.

Who comes out

At V&S Tile & Bath the owner does the estimate. Serge has installed tile and remodeled bathrooms since 2006, so the person looking at your walls is the person who knows what is usually behind them.

Customers mention it. One wrote that Serge "did more than give us a quote; he was a trusted advisor," and another that she "found Serge online. He was the first responder and I loved his suggestions."

What happens during the visit

  1. You walk us through the room

What bothers you about it, what you want to keep, and what the room has to do: aging in place, a guest bath, a kitchen for hosting.

  2. We measure

The room, the openings, the plumbing locations and anything that limits the layout, like a window or a load-bearing wall.

  3. We look for trouble

Soft floors around a toilet or tub, stains under a sink, loose tile. Nobody can price rot until the wall is open, but the signs often show at the estimate.

  4. We talk through choices

Tile or an Onyx shower, cabinets new or refaced, quartz or granite. You leave knowing what each choice does to the price.

  5. You see it in 3D

Before any work starts you see a 3D rendering of the room, so the layout and finishes are settled on screen rather than on site.

  6. You get a detailed written estimate

Each part of the job is listed, so you can compare it line by line.

What to have ready

  • Photos you have saved of rooms you like. Even one helps.
  • A rough number you want to stay under. Saying it early lets the design fit it, instead of the estimate coming back too high.
  • Anything you already know about the room: a past leak, an old repair, a jacuzzi a previous owner added.
  • When you would like the work done.

How to compare estimates

Line up two quotes and check that they cover the same work. A kitchen quote that leaves out the backsplash or the floor looks cheaper than it is. A bathroom quote should say what happens to the subfloor and the waterproofing behind the shower, not only the tile you will see.

Ask who does the work, and who you call if something is wrong. And ask to see the design before anything is ordered.

Questions about estimates

Is the estimate really free in Charlotte and the surrounding counties?

Yes. V&S Tile & Bath gives free in-home estimates across Charlotte and all of Mecklenburg, Union and Cabarrus counties, with no obligation to book.

What does a kitchen remodel start at?

Kitchen remodels with us start from $13K. See kitchen remodeling in Charlotte, NC for what moves the price.

How fast can a bathroom be done?

A full remodel depends on how much of the room changes, so the schedule comes with the estimate. Tub-to-shower conversions are quicker: most take 1-2 days.
