How does a bathroom remodel run?
Estimate and design
Serge measures the room and talks through the layout and materials with you. T. M. credited him with "honest recommendations that saved us money and potential problems." You see a 3D rendering of the new bathroom before any work starts.
Tear-out and demolition
The tile, tub or shower, vanity and toilet come out, usually with the drywall behind them. Soft subfloor around an old toilet gets replaced before anything new goes over it.
Plumbing rough-in
With the walls open, drains and supply lines move to where the new fixtures need them. Solid wood goes into the framing wherever grab bars or a wall-hung toilet will hang.
Shower waterproofing
The shower walls and floor get a waterproof membrane before any tile, with the seams and every pipe through the wall sealed.
Tile floor and walls
The shower walls and floor get tiled, with the floor layout usually started at the doorway so the cut pieces land along the walls and under the vanity.
Vanity and fixtures
The vanity and its top go in, then the toilet, faucet, shower trim and any grab bars.
Final walkthrough
You go through the finished bathroom with us and point out anything you want looked at again.
How do you budget for a bathroom remodel without a price list?
Start with the decisions that move the price, because two bathrooms the same size can cost very different amounts. That's why we don't publish our own bathroom prices. Published ranges from cost guides are collected in our guide to bathroom remodel cost in Charlotte, NC.
Keeping the toilet and drains where they are costs less than moving them. Large tiles and natural stone take more labor to set than standard porcelain. A granite or quartz vanity top prices differently from an Onyx one, and a tiled shower differently from one of our Onyx Collection shower systems.
Leave some room for what's behind the walls, since nobody can price rot or an old bad repair until the wall is open. If there's a number you want to stay under, say so at the estimate. Call (704) 617-9130 or use our quote request form.
What makes one bathroom remodel cost more than another?
Two bathrooms the same size can cost very different amounts. These choices move the price the most.
| Costs less | Costs more | |
|---|---|---|
| Plumbing | Toilet and drains stay where they are | Toilet or drains move |
| Tile | Standard porcelain tile | Large tiles and natural stone, which take more labor to set |
| Behind the walls | Walls opened and found sound | Rot or an old bad repair, which nobody can price until the wall is open |
A granite or quartz vanity top prices differently from an Onyx one, and a tiled shower differently from an Onyx shower system, so those get priced side by side at the estimate.
Can you live at home during a bathroom remodel?
You can usually stay in the house while we work. A home with one bathroom is the harder case, since that room is out of use for part of the job, so tell us early and the work gets ordered around it.
T. M.'s review describes the crew's main contact as "punctual, respectful of our home, and always kept us in the loop with daily updates." Changes happen too, and the same review says V&S "accommodated a few changes we made mid-project while staying on schedule."
What goes into an aging-in-place bathroom?
Mostly the shower, the toilet and the room to move around them. Janice W. had her bathroom redone to age in place, and wrote that her "1960's bathroom was transformed into a modern oasis with a wall hung toliet and walk in shower."
A wall-hung toilet can be mounted at the seat height you want, and the floor under it stays open for cleaning. Also worth raising at the estimate: clear floor to turn around with a walker, a vanity with knee room, lever handles, and a doorway with no raised threshold.
Shower seats and grab bar placement are on our tub-to-shower conversions page.

Questions about bathroom remodeling in Charlotte
Do you remodel bathrooms in Concord and the rest of Cabarrus County?
Yes, Concord and the rest of Cabarrus County are inside our service area. The estimate there is free, same as in Charlotte, and one crew carries the bathroom from design to the final walkthrough. When you call (704) 617-9130 or send a quote request, include your town so we can plan the visit.
Can you move a toilet or shower drain in a Mecklenburg County house?
Usually, yes, though how much work it takes depends on what's under the bathroom. Over a crawl space the pipes can be reached from below, while a concrete slab has to be cut open and patched, which adds cost. We coordinate those plumbing changes as part of the remodel and tell you at the estimate whether a move is worth it.
Can a half bath become a full bathroom?
Often, as long as there's floor space for a shower or a tub and a workable route for the new drain. Tatyana S., quoted near the top of this page, had us turn a half bath into a full guest bathroom. At the estimate we look at the room and the plumbing around it, then explain what the conversion would involve.
How long will we be without the bathroom?
It depends on how much of the room is changing, so we don't give a number of days until we've seen it. Taking a room to the studs takes longer than replacing the tile and vanity, and moving plumbing adds time on top. Serge goes over timing at the estimate, and the schedule gets worked out around your household.
Will Serge help with design and material choices?
He will: layout, tile, the vanity and fixture finishes all get talked through at the estimate, and Serge gives you his own recommendations. In Janice W.'s words, "His design advice was also spot on." Dennis C. wrote that it was their first bathroom remodel and that Sergey's team offered guidance along the way.
