Tub-to-shower conversions in Charlotte, NC

V&S Tile & Bath takes out old bathtubs and builds walk-in showers in their place for homeowners in Charlotte, Mint Hill, Matthews and nearby towns. Serge, the owner, does the free estimate, our crew handles demolition through the glass, and we coordinate the plumbing changes.

Most tub-to-shower conversions take 1 to 2 days. Before any work starts you see a 3D rendering of the new shower, so the layout, the curb and the niche are settled on screen rather than on site.

What's included in a tub-to-shower conversion?

A conversion covers the whole wet area, from pulling the old tub to hanging the new glass.

  • Tub and surround removal

Along with any damaged drywall or backer board behind them.

  • Drain relocation

Moved to where the new shower base needs it.

  • New shower valve

The tub valve swapped for a shower valve at a comfortable height.

  • Shower waterproofing

A membrane on the walls and base before any tile or panels.

  • Tile or Onyx walls

A custom tile shower or an Onyx Collection base and wall panels.

  • Niche, bench, grab bars

Built in wherever you want them.

  • Glass and trim

The shower glass and the valve trim you pick.

How does a tub-to-shower conversion run?

  1. Free estimate

Serge looks at the bathroom, the plumbing access and the floor. Then he puts together a detailed estimate with the price and the schedule.

  2. Design and materials

You choose tile or an Onyx system, the glass and the trim. Special-order tile can take a while to arrive, so we try to have materials on hand before demolition.

  3. Tub demolition

The tub and old surround come out. Old cast iron tubs are heavy and usually get broken up to carry out of the house.

  4. Plumbing and framing

The drain moves and the shower valve goes in. It's also the time to add blocking inside the walls for grab bars, even ones you don't want yet.

  5. Waterproofing walls and base

Once the tile is up nobody can check it again, so it gets done carefully.

  6. Walls and glass

Tile or panels go up, then the glass and fixtures.

  7. Final walkthrough

You look over the finished shower with us before we call it done.

Tile shower or Onyx shower system?

Both hold up. The real difference is cleaning, and how much say you want over the layout.

Our tile installation page goes further into layout and materials, and colors and options are on our Onyx Collection shower systems page.

Curbless, low curb or standard curb?

A curbless shower is the easiest to walk into and the most work to build, because the floor has to slope toward the drain across the whole wet area. In a lot of houses that means cutting into the subfloor, and some floor framing won't allow it at all.

A low curb gets you most of the benefit for less work. We check the floor at the estimate and tell you which of the three your bathroom can take. To book that visit, call (704) 617-9130 or send a quote request.

Should the tub go?

Usually the tub is cracked or chipped past the point where refinishing makes sense, or it's a jacuzzi a previous owner put in that never worked right. Plenty of the time nothing is broken, and the tub wall has just gotten harder to step over.

If it's the only bathtub in the house and you have young kids, or plan to sell to a family, think about keeping a tub somewhere. We'll say so at the estimate, before anything gets torn out.

If you plan to age in place, ask about a built-in bench or fold-down seat, a handheld shower on a slide bar and floor tile with more grip when wet. When a shower alone isn't enough, we also do barrier-free bathroom remodeling.

Questions about tub-to-shower conversions in Charlotte

Do you do tub-to-shower conversions in Union County?

Yes. Union County is part of our regular service area, including Indian Trail and Waxhaw. The estimate is free anywhere we work, and at that visit we tell you whether your bathroom needs anything beyond the usual, like a drain that has to move a long way or a section of subfloor that needs replacing.

Can you convert the tub in a Mecklenburg County condo or townhouse?

Usually, yes. Condos and townhouses often have rules about work hours and water shutoffs, and some HOAs want to approve a bathroom job before it starts. Get that approval first, and then we plan the demolition and plumbing days around the building's rules.

Will the rest of the bathroom be torn up?

No. A conversion replaces the tub and the walls around it. The vanity, the toilet and the rest of the floor stay as they are unless you want them changed, which is why most conversions take 1 to 2 days.

Can I keep a tub and just replace the shower?

Yes. We can replace the surround and the valve and leave a tub you like, or set a new tub with a tile or Onyx surround. Dottie T. had us take out an old jacuzzi, and her job ended with a new shower and a new bathtub, so both can happen in one project.

What does a tub-to-shower conversion cost in Charlotte?

We don't post our own range, because the drain move, the size of the shower and the materials change it. A conversion with a new valve, a tiled niche and frameless glass costs more than a panel shower in the same footprint, and what's behind the old tub can change the number once the wall is open. The ranges cost guides publish are in our guide to bathroom remodel cost in Charlotte, NC. The estimate is free.

How soon can you start?

That depends on the time of year and how long your tile or panels take to arrive. Special-order tile is usually what sets the start date, which is why we try to have materials in hand before the old tub comes out. Serge gives you the schedule along with the estimate.
